Simone Centola (SBIA Superyacht Cluster Chair) Champions Sustainable Superyacht Development

The arrival of an estimated fleet of around 100 superyachts for the 2027 America’s Cup in Naples represents far more than a world-class sporting event: it is a unique opportunity to establish a lasting legacy for the Mediterranean superyacht industry.

As Admiral Giuseppe Aulicino, Maritime Director of the Campania region, has confirmed, Italian authorities are already developing the regulatory framework and operational measures required to ensure the safe and efficient management of the event.

The Gulf of Naples and the wider Campania coastline already rank among Europe’s leading superyacht destinations, welcoming approximately 750 superyachts between 24 and 100 metres each summer, while supporting around 10 million passenger movements annually across cruise ships, ferries, hydrofoils and local maritime services. According to local port authorities, the region is among the world’s busiest maritime passenger hubs.

The America’s Cup will introduce additional operational complexity, bringing race support vessels, media craft, spectator boats, mini-cruise operators and approximately 100 visiting superyachts into one of the Mediterranean’s busiest and most environmentally sensitive maritime areas.

For the superyacht sector, this represents an opportunity to establish a long-term legacy built on two fundamental principles:

Maritime safety for people. Environmental sustainability for the sea.

The preliminary America’s Cup races scheduled for 24–26 September 2026 should represent the starting point for implementing the highest international standards in maritime safety, vessel traffic management, marina operations and environmental protection, not as temporary measures for a single event, but as permanent improvements benefiting the region for decades to come.

France has already introduced stricter environmental measures to protect sensitive marine ecosystems, including enhanced controls on anchoring and mooring by large yachts and superyachts, together with significant penalties for non-compliance. The America’s Cup provides Italy with the opportunity to adopt and further develop similar international best practices, combining environmental stewardship with world-class maritime safety while protecting the Mediterranean’s unique natural heritage.

Commenting on these developments, Simone Centola, originally from Campania and Chair of the Singapore Boating Industry Association’s Superyacht Cluster, said:

“The America’s Cup represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to position Naples and Campania at the forefront of the global superyacht industry. Maritime safety and environmental sustainability must become the twin pillars of this legacy.

By investing from the outset in smart maritime infrastructure, eco-friendly mooring solutions, resilient berthing capacity and internationally recognised safety standards, Naples and the wider Campania coastline can establish themselves as the leading superyacht destination in the Southern Mediterranean, combining operational excellence with the protection of exceptional marine ecosystems.

This includes safeguarding vital habitats such as Posidonia oceanica meadows and protecting threatened species, including the Mediterranean monk seal, whose recent sightings after decades of absence highlight the ecological importance of these waters.

This is not only an opportunity for Campania, but for Italy as a whole: a chance to demonstrate global leadership in sustainable yachting and create a benchmark that can inspire higher standards, stronger collaboration and responsible growth across the wider Mediterranean.”

Over the coming two weeks, Simone Centola will meet Italian institutions and industry stakeholders ahead of the Smart Marina Conference (20–21 September) and the International Superyacht Clusters Meeting (23 September) in Monaco.

The Singapore Boating Industry Association and its Superyacht Cluster look forward to strengthening collaboration with Italian and international partners to advance maritime safety, environmental sustainability and resilient superyacht infrastructure.
